Les Gaillards Old Vine Grenache Noir

Big, Rich, Lush Fruit and Port-Like Smoothness...
Available in 6 Bottle Cases
If you drive along the southwestern coast of France from Montpellier towards Spain on a clear day you start seeing the mountains of the French/Spanish frontier even before you get to Bézier. Along the coast is quite flat until Narbonne where the hills start near the coast.Perpignan, the foothills are now larger and if you turn and head towards the northwest, they are craggy and start to fill up with vineyards. Up in the Maury appellation they make fortified wines the same way as Port from Grenache grapes. This red is made from 100 year old vines by the Vignerons de Maury, whose fortified wines win awards all over Europe.

This wine is the same cuvée selected by the cooperative director, Thierry Cazach, for sale in their shop to their best customers. Un-fortified wine in a fortified appellation has a different designation, it is a ‘Vin de Pays Catalan’ or Catalonian Country wine. We tasted it and fell in love with this smooth but big everyday type of wine that gives the sense of the hot sunny summers of Southwest France. We thought it tasted a bit like a cross between an Amador County Red Zinfandel and a rich Port. It’s got all the fruit & alcohol of the California wine, with smooth tannins and a rich Port-like Grenache taste. You might even want to serve it a little chilled to mitigate the high, kirsch-scented alcohol up front. Serve it with your favorite Barbeque Sauce, Red Peppers in Balsamic, Spicy Sausages or a big Porterhouse steak on the grill. Or just crank one open to have on the deck of your house or boat. Move over Shiraz, this wine packs a boatload of fruit and texture, with a smooth, but lingering finish.
